Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Geofoam Earthwork Void Fill
EPS Geofoam is a lightweight fill material used in construction where conditions will not allow for conventional soil, sand or stone fill materials. It is often used when existing soil conditions are soft or loose and not capable of supporting required loads. It is approximately 100 times lighter than conventional fill and 20 times lighter than other lightweight fill alternatives.
Using EPS Geofoam greatly reduces vertical loads and reduces future settlement. Because blocks can be set into place by hand or by lightweight construction equipment, the use of earth moving equipment is reduced which can reduce project costs.
Geofoam blocks are delivered to the sight ready to use typically in sizes up to 3' x 4' x 8', or larger if the job requires. Since blocks typically weigh between 1 and 2 pounds per cubic foot, they can be easily put into place by hand. The material can be installed in any kind of weather and in areas with difficult access. If on-site cutting is required, a portable hot wire cutter or a standard chain saw can be used.
With compression strengths ranging from 2.2 psi to over 15 psi with 1% deformation, EPS Geofoam can accommodate almost any required design loads. Typical uses include bridge abutments, retaining walls, highway construction and general fill where lateral loads or site conditions preclude the use of conventional fill materials. It is also used around underground pipes and culvert reducing lateral and vertical loads.
